Grid-Tied: the entry-level option

Panels feed your switchboard and any excess exports to the grid at your retailer's buy-back rate. Lowest install cost, and wired battery-ready so you can add storage later without ripping anything out.

Hybrid (Battery): the family-home sweet spot

Anywhere near the coast, stainless fasteners, sealed cable entries and marine-grade isolators are standard on the install, at no extra charge. An install that fails in 7 years instead of 25 isn't a saving.

A plain grid-tied system shuts itself down the moment the grid drops. If your lines go down a few times most winters, as they do along the Thames Coast, a hybrid with battery keeps the essentials running through the cut.

Dairy sheds use their power in daylight

Is solar worth it in the Ngatea region?
For most households with high daytime usage, yes. Payback depends on system size, your retailer's tariff and how much electricity you use during daylight. EECA has guidance on solar payback. We design backwards from your usage, not your roof size.
What size system do I actually need?
Depends on your annual usage, your daytime usage pattern, your roof aspect and your future plans (EV, heat pump, pool, etc.). Typical NZ residential systems run from 3 kW to 10 kW. Larger dairy-shed and commercial installs go further. We size at the on-site visit, there's no template answer.
Do I need a battery?
If you want power-cut resilience (Thames Coast, Ngatea-region storm season) or you use most of your power in the evening, yes. If your usage is daytime-heavy and you're not concerned about cuts, grid-tied without a battery is often the better-value option. We walk through both at quote stage.
What happens when the grid goes down?
Grid-tied systems shut down for safety. The inverter's built-in anti-islanding protection (AS/NZS 4777.2) stops it backfeeding the dead lines and keeps line crews safe. Hybrid systems with batteries keep selected essential circuits running automatically. Off-grid systems don't care about the grid going down, they're not connected to it.
Will solar work on the Thames Coast or up by Kaiaua and Miranda?
Yes. Coastal sites need marine-grade mounting hardware, stainless fasteners, sealed cable entries, salt-air-rated isolators. We use this gear as standard on the Thames Coast, Kaiaua/Miranda and Waihi Beach installs. We also spec panels rated for salt-air conditions for these coastal jobs, not every panel on the market is, so it's something we check before we quote.
Do I have to arrange certification and the grid connection myself?
No. Charly manages the whole job end to end, including coordinating the required independent inspection and the lines-company connection application. You have one point of contact and nothing to chase.
Can I add a battery to an existing solar system later?
Often yes. Depends on whether the original install was wired battery-ready and whether the existing inverter is compatible. If not, an AC-coupled battery is usually still an option. We assess the existing system first. See Battery Storage Solutions for the retrofit path.
Does solar make sense on a dairy shed?
Often yes. A milking shed uses most of its power in daylight, when the panels are generating, so you use most of what you make rather than exporting it. See Farm Solar for the shed-side install.
