How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

If your home still has its original wiring and a ceramic fuse board, it's likely due. Most NZ houses wired before the 1970s used rubber or cloth-insulated cable that goes brittle with age, paired with rewireable fuses instead of modern safety switches. That combination is the main reason older homes get rewired.

The everyday signs are worth watching for. Breakers or fuses that keep tripping, warm or discoloured outlets, lights that flicker, a faint burning smell, or so few power points that multiboards run every room. If a few of those sound familiar, it's worth getting the wiring checked before it turns into a problem.

What does your switchboard actually do?

Your switchboard is the hub that takes the power coming into your home and splits it into the separate circuits that feed your lights, sockets and appliances. It's also the safety gear that cuts the power the instant something goes wrong. Get it up to current standard and most of the everyday electrical worries in an older home go away.

The main switch

Turns the whole supply on and off in one place. It's the first thing isolated before any work, and the switch you reach for in an emergency.

Safety switches (RCDs)

An RCD watches the flow on a circuit and cuts the power within milliseconds if it detects a leak to earth. It's the protection that stops a shock becoming serious, and older boards often have none.

The circuits

Each breaker feeds one part of the house and trips on overload, so a fault in the kitchen doesn't take out the whole place. More circuits means fewer nuisance trips.

Common questions from Ngatea homeowners

Straight answers to what people ask before they book a visit.

Why do my power fuses or circuit breakers keep tripping?
Frequent tripping usually means an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, or aging wiring, common in older Paeroa, Thames and Te Aroha houses. We test the circuits, find the fault and bring the switchboard up to current AS/NZS 3000 standards if needed.
Is old or damaged wiring dangerous in NZ homes?
Yes. Deteriorated wiring in older properties across Turua, Thames Coast and Te Kauwhata is a fire and shock risk. Flickering lights, burning smells or warm outlets all warrant a licensed electrician taking a look as soon as possible.
Do I need an electrician to replace power points or light fittings?
In almost all cases, yes. WorkSafe NZ and the electrical regulations require a licensed electrician for fixed wiring, new outlets and most lighting work. DIY on fixed wiring can void your insurance and create safety risks down the track.
Do you replace old rewireable-fuse switchboards?
Yes, and this is one of the most common jobs we do on older houses in Paeroa, Thames and Te Aroha. We swap to a modern RCD-protected board and get it properly tested and certified, so it's all done in one go.
Can you install a Type 2 EV charger at home?
Yes. We install 7 kW wall units (the standard for a NZ home), do the supply-capacity check, and run a dedicated circuit back to the switchboard. Common at new builds in Te Kauwhata and increasingly at older homes where the owner's gone electric.
Do you cover towns outside of Ngatea?
Yes, 27 named towns from Maramarua in the north Waikato through Ngatea and Paeroa to Waihi, plus the Thames Coast from Tararu to Thornton Bay. See where we work for the full list.
Will I get certification for the work?
Yes. Every job that needs it gets it, handed over at completion so it's on file for your insurance and your records.
Do you charge a call-out fee for quotes?
No call-out fee for quotes within the Ngatea region, Thames Coast and Coromandel patch. We come to you, look at the job, and you get a written quote, no obligation if it's not the right time.
