For Waihi's baches and coastal homes

Waihi covers two very different jobs: the older homes up in the township, and the holiday baches down at Waihi Beach. The coast brings its own problems, salt-damaged fittings, baches that sit empty half the year, and boards that need bringing up to standard. For the wider picture see our rural electrical page.

Bach and holiday-home power-ups

Turning a bach back on after a winter shut can be a hassle. Cable chewed by mice, RCDs that trip and stay tripped, circuits that stay dead when you flick the main. We check the board, test the safety switches, track down the faults and get you running before the family turns up.

Coastal-corrosion repairs

Salt air corrodes outlets, switchboard enclosures and metal fittings on beach-side properties, sometimes within a few years. We replace them with weatherproof IP-rated enclosures and marine-grade fittings built for the coast, so you are not paying to fix the same outlet over and over.

Switchboard upgrades in the township

A lot of the older township homes still run an ageing rewireable-fuse board, the kind insurers flag at renewal. We replace it with a modern RCD-protected board, re-terminate every circuit, then test and certify it, usually inside a day.

Warmth and dryness in a closed-up bach

A bach shut up for months goes damp and musty. A heat pump dries the room it is in, but the moisture sits everywhere else. Adding a SmartVent system keeps air moving through the whole house between visits, so it is dry when you get there.

Shop, cafe and accommodation fit-outs

Retail and cafes in the township, plus holiday accommodation out at the Beach. Switchboard load checks, LED lighting, power for POS systems and EV chargers for guests. We work around your fit-out timeline and keep power on where we can.

Waihi electrician FAQs

Straight answers to what Waihi homeowners and bach owners ask before they book a visit. Anything not here, just give us a call.

Can you get a bach powered up and checked over?
Yes, that is a common one. We check the board, test the safety switches and sort any faults before you move back in. Old baches often turn up chewed cable or a dead RCD. Most are done in a morning.
How do you stop salt air ruining outdoor outlets?
Salt air is hard on outdoor fittings out at the Beach, so we use weatherproof, corrosion-resistant gear built for the coast. It costs a bit more, but standard fittings can rot out in a few years, so it pays off. We fit it as standard on any Beach-side job.
Can you fit a heat pump around our guest bookings?
Yes, and it is usually a day's work. We book around your guests so it does not clash with bookings, whether that is mid-week or in the off-season.
Is solar worth it for a bach we only use half the year?
Depends how you use the place. If you just want lower bills and backup for when you are there, a grid-tied system with a battery makes sense. If you want to run right off the grid, that works too. Our Solar Power Waihi page covers both, and EECA has good independent guidance.
Can you put in an EV charger at the bach?
Yes. We check the supply first, as some older Beach baches need an upgrade before a charger can go in, then quote once we know what is involved. No surprises halfway through.
Do you cover both Waihi township and the Beach?
Yes, both are in our patch. They fall under different councils, Hauraki District for the township and Western Bay of Plenty for the Beach, so the odd job needs different paperwork. We sort whichever applies.
Is a holiday home any different to wire than a normal house?
The wiring rules are the same either way. In practice, a place that sits empty for months is worth a safety check before you use it again, and anything close to the coast needs gear that stands up to salt air. The rest is the same as any home.
Can you check a bach is safe before we rent it out?
Yes. We check the board, test the RCDs and look over the visible wiring. If you need a safety-check report for the listing, Charly can issue one as a registered EWRB inspector.
