What is off-grid solar?

Off-grid solar is a stand-alone power system that runs a property entirely on its own solar panels and batteries, with no connection to the national grid. A backup generator covers the odd stretch of bad weather. It is the usual answer for baches, farms and rural blocks where a grid connection is too far away, or too expensive, to bring in. Here is how it sits against the two grid-connected setups most people know.

Panels feed the house and any extra goes back to the grid. No batteries, so when the power cuts out, so does the solar. Cheapest to install.

Grid-tied with a battery added. Stores your own power and rides through a cut, but stays connected to the network as a backstop.

How do I decide between off-grid and a grid connection?
Get a grid-extension quote from your lines company first, then compare against an off-grid system quote from us. We will walk through the total picture, capital outlay, ongoing running cost, generator fuel, maintenance, for both options so you can see the break-even. Sometimes off-grid wins outright. Sometimes the grid does.
Will an off-grid system run my whole house?
Yes, if it is sized for your usage. We design backwards from your priority loads and reasonable lifestyle. Most households make small adjustments, sequencing the washing machine and the oven, for example, that save real capital without affecting daily life.
How often does the backup generator run?
A correctly sized system runs the generator a few times a month in winter and almost never in summer. Undersized systems run it constantly. We do not undersize. Auto-start on low battery state means you do not have to think about it.
What if the inverter fails?
Quality inverters carry 5 to 10 year manufacturer warranties and we choose brands with NZ-based service and stock. On systems where it suits the design, we can wire in a generator changeover so the genset can feed key circuits directly as a stop-gap while we organise replacement. We talk through this at quote stage so you know exactly how your system behaves.
Can I add to my off-grid system later?
Yes. Modular design is standard. Adding panels is straightforward, adding battery capacity is straightforward, replacing or upsizing the generator is straightforward. We build the wiring and battery enclosure with future expansion in mind.
Do I need a building consent?
The electrical work itself does not need a building consent. Battery enclosures, generator sheds and significant ground-mount structures may need building consent depending on your council. The WorkSafe Energy Safety regulations govern the electrical side. We will flag consent requirements at quote stage.
Does off-grid solar actually work in cloudy NZ winters?
Yes, with proper design. We size for winter generation, which is significantly lower than summer in most of NZ, plus battery autonomy for cloudy stretches, plus the generator as the worst-case backup. Stand-alone power systems have been running in remote NZ properties for decades.
